THORNELOE QUONTA REPORT
Tova Arbus
Only a month into the school year, but already Thorneloe is buzzing
with activity. Classes are well underway, and the fall mainstage has
been cast.
Summer vacation seems to have been anything but, with projects
abounding both here and abroad. Dr. Ian Maclennan spent the summer at
CentrStage in Launceston, Tasmania, directing a cast of six males in
his own adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew.
Titled The Squaddie’s Shrew, Maclennan’s version was set in an army
barracks.  The script is being prepared for publication and further
performances here are projected.
Professor H. Ulrich Sikora directed Wm. Shakespeare’s A Midsummer
Night’s Dream at the local arts high school, Sudbury Secondary, where
it was a terrific success. The production took place out of doors, at
various locations, with the audience moving from one to the next. A
neat innovation was having Oberon’s voice taped and played back from
different speakers.
Fourth year student Tova Arbus took on the challenge of directing
Thorneloe’s annual Summer Shakespeare. This year, the production was
Twelfth Night. The primarily student cast work extremely hard, and put
together a great show, filled with energy and enthusiasm. Many from the
community came out to see the performances, and seemed to greatly enjoy
the experience.
September quickly rolled around, and with it came auditions for yet
another Shakespeare, this time the infamous Scottish play. Directed by
Professor Valerie Senyk, this fall’s production of Macbeth promises to
be very exciting. When asked about the show, Senyk responded “Macbeth
rehearsals are under way for an exploration of the lusty underpinnings
of one of the Bard's most infamous characters.”
Thorneloe’s winter mainstage has already been announced, with
auditions planned for the end of November. Breaking away from the
“Shakespeare trend”, Dr. Ian Maclennan will be directing Moliere’s
Tartuffe. This 17th century comedy promises to be both a challenging
and enjoyable experience.
Professor H. Ulrich Sikora is also planning to stage a production
during the year. Rumour has it that he plans to do a work by
philosopher Ayn Rand, although this has yet to be confirmed.
Checking in with some of our graduates…
R.J. Comeau has is currently living in Toronto, where he has signed
with the agency Inflight Artists Group. He recently received 2 more
credits towards his ACTRA full membership, and auditioned for  his
first commercial.
Liz Buchannan recently played Adrianna in A Comedy of Erros for the
Shakespeare in the Vineyard summer theatre company. She would like to
express thanks to the QUONTA board for recognizing her with QUONTA’s
President’s award last year. Although not quite finished yet, spring
2007 graduate Jenny Hazleton has announced plans to attend the Jacques
Lecoq School of Physical Theatre in Paris, France.
Nice to know our students are carrying the Thorneloe name out into the
world!
